Heavy metals are the metals having a density at least five times more than that of water. Cadmium is one of the heavy trace metal elements in the natural world and it has become a main environmental polluter with the development of modern industries .it has been proved that cadmium is neither an essential microelement for the growth of plants and animals, nor participates in the process of cell metabolism. But if large amount of Cd2+ is accumulating in living organisms, serious poisoning will occur. They are normally regarded as ones having an atomic number of 22-92.The effects of different concentration (10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 mg/l) of Cadmium sulphate on somatic chromosomes in root tips of green gram (Vigna radiata.L) were studied. The inhibition of Root growth was noticed at higher concentrations of Cadmium. Cadmium had more toxic effect than other metals on the root tip cells of green gram during mitosis. Chromosome stickiness implied the high toxicity of Cadmium. The results also indicated that the percentage of aberrations and was gradually decreased with the increasing concentration of heavy metals.
